The Family Self-Sufficiency Program
An Opportunity for participants of the Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS) is an entity of the
Housing Choice Voucher Program. The goal of
this program is to assist families in becoming independent of public
assistance programs. The FSS Program has open slots and is available to all
families currently receiving Housing Choice Voucher/Section 8 funds through
a Local
Housing Authority. Families participating in the program design a
workable plan for themselves to become self-sufficient over the following
five-year period. The Family Resource Coordinator (FRC) helps the family
with accessing public and private resources to assist with assessing career
goals, job training and employment. The family member and the FRC develop an
individual action plan and contract of projected dates for completion of
tasks enable participants to measure progress in reaching their goals.
Participants draw on their unique strengths and determination in striving
toward self-sufficiency. Regular contact with participants offers the
opportunity to problem-solve difficulties before they become barriers to
self-sufficiency. Some graduates of the Family Self-Suffiency Program are
now employed at their dream jobs. Some have even purchased homes. Please
contact Sandie Reiniger, the Family Resource Coordinator, for additional
information..
